Are you eating or drinking for comfort, to feel better?
Here's 5 signs you may be comforting with food, stress and/or emotional eating!!
Do you recognise any of these signs?
Some of your behaviours could be part of a thing commonly called - “stress eating” or “emotional eating”- also can be binge eating.
It’s usually triggered by certain thoughts, behaviours, feelings, typically effecting us in a negative ways.
Where we mindlessly eat or use food for comfort if feeling sad, down fatigued, bored, numb and lost.
Heres 5 signs that you may be emotionally or stress eating.
1. Your skipping meals, avoiding food during the day and then starving, craving sugar - raiding the pantry by end of day.
2. Ignoring hunger but then ravishing, sugar cravings, looking for quick fixes, then over eating.
3. You open a packet of food, you can’t stop eating, even if you don’t want it, need to finish the whole packet and feel out of control.
4. After eating you feel regrets, guilt, shame and a hopelessness - paying out on yourself, self loathing.
5. When fatigued, bored, sad you automatically comfort with your, “go to” foods or drink.
The brain is clever, it wants instant gratification, reward feels- dopamine hits to create self soothing all short term fixes that make you feel worse afterwards.
There’s many triggers for these types of habits, repeated behaviours.
They are also predictable so we can plan ahead ready for the next time.
And please know this isn’t about your willpower, self discipline - it’s 100% emotionally fuelled - and some habits, feelings, foods, thoughts, people, situations trigger this response - (we are fight or flight creatures)
And it’s easy to see, to plan for, using tweaks, swaps and distraction strategies.
Awareness around your patterns is step 1.
Step 2. Making it mean nothing about you, take away judgement - there’s no good or bad, you or the foods.
Step 3. Take the power away from those chips or chocolate bar.
step 4. Create new routines and healthier options, better habits, better relationship with food and yourself
